Sunset over the Sound. Walk out along Trustees Road — it's a sand spit with water on both sides. Parking enforcement eases off after Labor Day.

Field 5 is the far east end and the quietest, with a boardwalk out to the Fire Island Lighthouse. About 50 minutes from St. James.

Launch from Cordwood Park in Head of the Harbor. Flat, sheltered water with the village across the harbor. Go near high tide; the harbor gets shallow as it drains.

Postcard village on the harbor. The eagle above the post office flaps its wings on the hour, which is worth timing.

North ForkOut to the North Fork. Roughly an hour each way, with the whole family.

A working harbor village at the tip of the fork. Lunch on the water, walk the docks, and ride the 1920s carousel in Mitchell Park.

MapOrient Beach State Park
Twenty minutes past Greenport at the very end of the fork. A long spit with the Sound on one side and Gardiners Bay on the other, and almost nobody on it. Walk the point, then pick up oysters and cider at the farm stands on the way back down Route 25.
